A m\u00e9s, a Mart es troba el volc\u00e0 m\u00e9s alt i gran de tot el sistema solar: el Mont Olimp, arribant a una altura de quasi 23 kil\u00f2metres. Aquest volc\u00e0 es troba en una regi\u00f3 de Mart anomenada <em>Tharsis Montes<\/em>, on tamb\u00e9 es troben altres volcans amb unes dimensions enormes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><u><strong>Caracter\u00edstiques del Mont Olimp<\/strong><\/u><\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">El Mont Olimp \u00e9s el volc\u00e0 m\u00e9s jove de Mart. Es va formar fa 1 800 milions d\u2019anys. Tot i que el pic m\u00e9s alt d\u2019aquest volc\u00e0 s\u2019eleva a quasi 23 kil\u00f2metres sobre la superf\u00edcie marciana, el volc\u00e0 es troba en una depressi\u00f3 d\u2019uns 2 kil\u00f2metres de profunditat. Per tant, el Mont Olimp \u00e9s quasi tres cops m\u00e9s alt que el pic m\u00e9s alt de la Terra, l\u2019Everest, arribant aquest \u00faltim a uns 9 kil\u00f2metres per sobre del nivell del mar, concretament 8.848 metres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Aquest volc\u00e0 d\u2019enormes dimensions est\u00e0 vorejat per penya-segats for\u00e7a verticals, amb una altura de 6 kil\u00f2metres. Comparant la mida d\u2019aquest volc\u00e0 amb els de la Terra, podem apreciar que, els penya-segats que el voregen, s\u00f3n m\u00e9s alts que moltes muntanyes i volcans a la Terra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Al pic del Mont Olimp es troba una caldera volc\u00e0nica d\u2019enormes dimensions. Aquesta caldera t\u00e9 85 kil\u00f2metres de llarg, 60 kil\u00f2metres d\u2019amplada, i 3 kil\u00f2metres de profunditat. La base d\u2019aquest volc\u00e0 t\u00e9 un di\u00e0metre de 620 kil\u00f2metres, aproximadament la mateixa mida que l\u2019estat d\u2019Arizona, als Estats Units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><u><strong>Mida i forma<\/strong><\/u><\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">L\u2019enorme base que t\u00e9 aquest volc\u00e0 li dona una \u00e0rea, a la seva base, d\u2019aproximadament 283 000 km<sup>2<\/sup>. Si el Mont Olimp es trob\u00e9s a Europa, cobriria gran part de Fran\u00e7a. Unes dimensions tan grans s\u00f3n dif\u00edcils d\u2019imaginar. En efecte, les dimensions d\u2019aquest volc\u00e0 s\u00f3n tan grans, que si ens trob\u00e9ssim a la superf\u00edcie de Mart no podr\u00edem veure completament la seva forma. Encara que ens n\u2019alluny\u00e9ssim, nom\u00e9s veur\u00edem un mur semblant a un enorme penya-segat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">D\u2019igual manera, tampoc el podr\u00edem veure sencer si ens trob\u00e9ssim al seu cim. Des del seu punt m\u00e9s alt, nom\u00e9s podr\u00edem veure part del seu pendent. No arribar\u00edem a veure el final, ja que es barrejaria amb l\u2019horitz\u00f3. Per tant, l\u2019\u00fanica manera de poder observar el Mont Olimp en la seva totalitat \u00e9s des de l\u2019espai.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Com a comparaci\u00f3, el volc\u00e0 m\u00e9s gran de la Terra \u00e9s el Mauna Kea, un dels volcans de les illes Hawaii, amb una altura d\u2019uns 10 kil\u00f2metres (la major part es troba sota l\u2019aigua) i 120 kil\u00f2metres de base. El Mont Olimp cont\u00e9 uns 4 milions de kil\u00f2metres c\u00fabics de material, i el seu volum \u00e9s aproximadament 100 vegades m\u00e9s gran que el del Mauna Kea.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">El Mont Olimp \u00e9s un volc\u00e0 en escut. Aquest tipus de volcans es caracteritzen per ser m\u00e9s amples i alts, i tenir una forma rodona i plana. En comptes de llan\u00e7ar de manera violenta roques, cendres o lava, els volcans en escut es creen per lava que flueix lentament pels seus costats. Com a resultat, el volc\u00e0 t\u00e9 les caracter\u00edstiques abans mencionades, amb un pendent de nom\u00e9s un 5%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><em><u><strong>La formaci\u00f3 d\u2019un gegant<\/strong><\/u><\/em><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Per qu\u00e8 hauria de formar-se un volc\u00e0 de tan grans dimensions a Mart per\u00f2 no a la Terra?L\u2019explicaci\u00f3 per aquest fenomen t\u00e9 a veure amb les plaques tect\u00f2niques a Mart, o m\u00e9s ben dit, amb la seva abs\u00e8ncia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Sota la superf\u00edcie hi ha algunes \u00e0rees on les temperatures s\u00f3n molt elevades. Aquestes zones s\u2019anomenen \u00abpunts calents\u00bb. En ells es genera grans quantitats de magma. A la Terra, les plaques tect\u00f2niques es mouen per sobre d\u2019aquests punts calents, donant lloc al naixement de nous volcans. De fet, les illes Hawaii s\u00f3n el resultat del moviment cap al nord-est de la placa Pac\u00edfica sobre un punt calent estacionari que produeix lava. A mesura que la placa es mou per sobre d\u2019aquest punt calent, nous volcans es formen i els ja existents s\u2019extingeixen. Aix\u00f2 fa que es distribueixi el volum total de lava en molts volcans en comptes d\u2019un \u00fanic i enorme volc\u00e0.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">A Mart, on no hi ha plaques tect\u00f2niques, o almenys no es mouen, la lava es va apilant, per formar un \u00fanic i enorme volc\u00e0. Al 2004, la sonda <em>Mars Express<\/em>, de la ESA (Ag\u00e8ncia Espacial Europea), va detectar que els fluxos de lava en els pendents del Mont Olimp semblaven tenir una antiguitat de nom\u00e9s 2 milions d\u2019anys, data molt recent en termes geol\u00f2gics.
