Els \u00e0toms es poden ajuntar en elements m\u00e9s pesants. Per exemple, l\u2019aigua est\u00e0 formada per dos \u00e0toms d\u2019hidrogen i un \u00e0tom d\u2019oxigen. Hi ha molts altres elements que estan formats per m\u00e9s \u00e0toms, per exemple el ferro. Tot i aix\u00ed, tamb\u00e9 hi ha elements compostos per menys \u00e0toms, com l\u2019hidrogen. A la taula peri\u00f2dica es classifiquen tots els elements que coneixem avui en dia. Tots els elements estan formats per \u00e0toms, els quals cada un t\u00e9 un n\u00famero at\u00f2mic diferent. El n\u00famero at\u00f2mic fa refer\u00e8ncia al n\u00famero de protons que t\u00e9 el nucli d\u2019un \u00e0tom, que \u00e9s igual al n\u00famero de electrons que orbiten el nucli.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Tots els \u00e0toms estan organitzats de la mateixa manera. Al centre de l\u2019\u00e0tom hi ha el seu nucli. El nucli est\u00e0 compost per protons i neutrons. Els protons i neutrons, que tenen c\u00e0rrega oposada, aconsegueixen mantenir-se junts a causa de la for\u00e7a nuclear forta, que mant\u00e9 units els nuclis del \u00e0toms. Els protons estan formats per quarks i gluons. Als protons hi ha, en total, tres quarks: dos quarks \u00abup\u00bb i un quark \u00abdown\u00bb. Als neutrons passa el contrari: hi ha dos quarks \u00abdown\u00bb i un quark \u00abup\u00bb. Els gluons, l\u2019altra part\u00edcula subat\u00f2mica que forma part dels protons i neutrons, mant\u00e9 units els quarks per a que no s\u2019escapin.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Al voltant del nucli d\u2019un \u00e0tom hi ha els electrons. Els electrons donen voltes al nucli, i depenent del tipus d\u2019\u00e0tom, hi ha m\u00e9s o menys electrons. Els electrons orbiten al voltant del nucli at\u00f2mic en diferents capes, com una ceba.
