Al mateix temps de la formaci\u00f3 la Via L\u00e0ctia, es va formar el sistema solar, i uns 200 000 milions o 300 000 milions d\u2019estrelles m\u00e9s. Tot i aix\u00ed, tamb\u00e9 hi ha gent que pensa que a la Via L\u00e0ctia hi ha uns 400 000 milions d\u2019estrelles. Aix\u00f2 li dona unes dimensions m\u00e9s grans del normal, doncs hi ha gal\u00e0xies que tenen moltes menys estrelles que la nostra. La Via L\u00e0ctia t\u00e9 un di\u00e0metre aproximat de 100 000 anys llum, el que significa que tardar\u00edem 100 000 anys per a creuar-la d\u2019una punta a l\u2019altra a la velocitat de la llum, que \u00e9s de 300 000 km\/s, i,exactament, de 299 792,458 km\/s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A l\u2019univers les gal\u00e0xies es classifiquen en diferents tipus segons la seva morfologia visual, \u00e9s a dir, segons la seva aparen\u00e7a. La Via L\u00e0ctia es una gal\u00e0xia espiral. Aquest tipus de gal\u00e0xies s\u00f3n les m\u00e9s conegudes i es caracteritzen pels seus bra\u00e7os en espiral als quals es situen les estrelles que la formen. En aquest cas, el sistema solar es situa al bra\u00e7 d\u2019Ori\u00f3, un dels 4 bra\u00e7os que t\u00e9 la Via L\u00e0ctia. El nostre sistema se situa tamb\u00e9 als afores de la gal\u00e0xia, lluny del forat negre supermassiu que hi ha al centre de la gal\u00e0xia (com en moltes altres), que per ara pensem que no est\u00e0 actiu, doncs no engoleix mat\u00e8ria. Per\u00f2 aquest tipus de gal\u00e0xies no \u00e9s l\u2019\u00fanic a l\u2019univers, hi ha tamb\u00e9 gal\u00e0xies el\u00b7l\u00edptiques, lenticulars i irregulars.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>La nostra gal\u00e0xia forma part d\u2019un conjunt de gal\u00e0xies al qual hem anomenat Grup Local. Aquest conjunt de gal\u00e0xies en compr\u00e8n unes 33, de les quals la nostra \u00e9s la m\u00e9s gran, despr\u00e9s d\u2019Andr\u00f2meda, una de les gal\u00e0xies m\u00e9s properes a nosaltres. Per desgr\u00e0cia, la nostra gal\u00e0xia i la d\u2019Andr\u00f2meda van en una traject\u00f2ria de col\u00b7lisi\u00f3 l\u2019una amb l\u2019altra, per\u00f2, per sort, encara no tenim de qu\u00e8 preocupar-nos, doncs es calcula que col\u00b7lisionaran d\u2019aqu\u00ed uns 4.000 milions d\u2019anys. M\u00e9s enll\u00e0 del Grup Local, hi ha tamb\u00e9 molts c\u00famuls de gal\u00e0xies. Els c\u00famuls s\u00f3n grans agrupacions de gal\u00e0xies, i s\u00f3n molt m\u00e9s grans, que el Grup Local, poden contenir centenars de gal\u00e0xies m\u00e9s. Encara hi ha m\u00e9s gal\u00e0xies als superc\u00famuls, que en poden albergar milers.
